Blogger–; Wordpress++;
I just switched the blog over to Wordpress from Blogger. Setting up Wordpress was painless, and its import feature brought in all the Blogger posts without effort. I think this means that I’ve tried Drupal, Blogger, and Wordpress now at least two times each. Wordpress seems pretty good this time around.
Most recently, I had switched to Blogger because I didn’t want to have to think about hosting my own database, worry about registered users, etc. I just wanted to write a blog entry every now and again and not have to worry about.
However, Blogger was missing the ability to do categories, future publishing, trackbacks, pingbacks, blogrolls, “more” on posts, etc. which I eventually started to get a hankering for. The more I blogged, the more I noticed what Blogger was missing.
Wordpress is pretty feature-rich. I’ve only had a whopping 10 comments since I started hosting with Blogger, so I don’t think I have to worry about alienating my “user base.”
One potential drawback of Wordpress is that is an all dynamic application. I don’t know how much traffic a Wordpress-driven site can handle, but I know they melt if they ever get hit with a slashdotting — not that I ever have to worry about it, but still something to consider.
I found a wp-Cache plugin for Wordpress tha will cache flat-file copies on he filesystem and give them a time-to-live. It’s still got to hit the database, just not as much. So if the site ever starts to slo down, I can try the cache plug-in.
